If you're shopping for a new compact utility vehicle that offers something different, there's a new kid on the block in the shape of the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet. The Hornet is an entirely new addition to the Dodge family that reintroduces a compact SUV into the range along with the brand's first-ever hybrid powertrains. Bulging muscle-SUV styling
It can't have escaped your notice that there are quite a few compact crossover SUVs around these days, and it can sometimes be hard to tell one from another. You wouldn't expect a Dodge entry into this crowded segment of the market to follow the herd, and the all-new Hornet certainly doesn't. Instead, the Hornet adopts the brand's traditional muscle car styling cues of hood vents, a broad and low rectangular grille, LED headlights and running lights, and a red full-length light square at the rear that does capture the Dodge DNA.
A Blacktop package is available and will probably be almost essential for some shoppers with its gloss black elements in the usual places and some aggressively-styled 18-inch black alloy wheels. A Track Pack is also available that upgrades the alloys to 20-inch wheels and adds flashing red Brembo front brake calipers.
Powertrains and performance
It's all well and good looking the part, but the 2023 Dodge Hornet has some pretty serious muscle car power and performance heritage to live up to in this new incarnation of the Dodge brand. There are two different performance grades offered from the launch. The first of the pair is a GT model with a 2.0-liter turbo-four under the hood producing a useful 268 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, which goes to all four wheels through a nine-speed automatic transmission.
The alternative powerplant is where things get interesting, as the Hornet R/T features Dodge's first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain. The system Dodge has chosen to use features a 1.3-liter turbo-four gas engine paired with a 90-kW electric motor that powers the rear axle. And if you think it's going to be a fuel-efficient but dull option, think again. The R/T's plug-in hybrid puts out more power than any utility vehicle in its segment, with 285 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft. of torque. And as a bonus, the R/T also has a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that allows up to 30 miles of electric-only driving range.
Hornet's 'sting' in the tail
The 2023 Dodge Hornet has a sting in its tail from a feature called PowerShot. If you're familiar with Formula One, you may recognize it. Otherwise, PowerShot is something you might start to see more of in the future. PowerShot is a class-exclusive feature for the Hornet R/T that provides a 25-horsepower boost and delivers instant torque. Activated by pulling both steering-wheel mounted paddle shifters and performing a kickdown on the accelerator pedal, PowerShot knocks a second off the usual 0 to 60 mph time by boosting horsepower and acceleration with bursts of additional power deployed by the battery and electric motor.
The extra power can be deployed for up to 15 seconds and can be used again after just a 15-second cool-down period. The Hornet R/t also features three hybrid driving modes that can be accessed through a dedicated button conveniently located on the steering wheel. Hybrid Mode delivers maximum combined efficiency of the conventional engine and e-Motor. Electric Mode offers all-electric, zero-emission driving and automatically switches back to hybrid when the battery is depleted or when the driver demands extra power by a kickdown. Finally, E-Save Mode prioritizes the conventional engine to preserve battery charge and also has a Passive option to maintain the charge and an Active option to help recharge the battery.
